This summer, wildfires have struck many parts of Spain with devastating human, environmental and economic consequences. Our solidarity goes out to those affected, and our deepest respect to those fighting on the front line.
At Celestia TST, we are proud to be part of GAIA, a pioneering European project that combines smart mobility, autonomous navigation and active surveillance technologies to transform the prevention and management of forest fires. This technological effort aims to reshape emergency response through collaboration between science, industry and vulnerable regions.
Cantabria, home to our headquarters, has over 70% of its territory covered by forest or semi-natural areas, making it highly exposed to fires that threaten not only the landscape but also rural development and strategic sectors such as extensive livestock farming and nature tourism – key pillars of the local economy. Annual economic losses caused by wildfires in Spain exceed €2 billion, not to mention the environmental and emotional cost of restoring scorched ecosystems.

Iván Bermejo Herrero, project lead at Celestia TST, confirms that more than 60% of this innovative initiative has already been completed, showcasing the power of cross-sector collaboration to save lives, protect natural heritage and minimise the economic impact of these disasters. Our goal is to establish a comprehensive, data-driven strategy based on anticipation, ensuring that the fight against fire is as efficient and safe as possible – from early warning to environmental restoration.
We thank El Diario Montañés for shining a light on this work, which represents a crucial technological commitment to the safety and sustainability of our territory. You can read the full article by clicking here.
