Aena has awarded the consortium formed by Celestia TST and Ambar Telecomunicaciones the project to equip the 46 airports and 2 heliports it manages in Spain with an Internet of Things (IoT) network based on LoRaWAN technology.

With an investment of €3.45 million and a 24-month execution period, the rollout includes the installation of over 860 gateways, enabling real-time data capture and analysis to optimise processes, anticipate operational needs and enhance passenger experience.

First use case: smart restroom monitoring

The first service to go live will be real-time monitoring of restroom occupancy and conditions, tracking parameters such as usage levels, water temperature and ambient humidity. This data will allow automated maintenance, improve cleaning staff efficiency and raise the quality of service offered to travellers.

This initial deployment lays the foundation for a scalable network designed to progressively incorporate new use cases in areas such as predictive maintenance, energy management, logistics and security.

Technology and efficient rollout

The project begins with coverage studies and on-site measurements to determine the optimal placement of gateways.

The IoT network will be integrated into each airport’s Multi-Service Network (RMS), ensuring compatibility, operational continuity and information security without interfering with critical communications.

The joint venture will also provide remote management and configuration tools, along with specialised training for Aena staff, ensuring agile maintenance and optimal use of the infrastructure.

The project will be supported by Netmore, a multinational with extensive experience in LoRaWAN networks, reinforcing the robustness of the deployment and facilitating the application of international best practices.

A key infrastructure for the future

For Celestia TST, this project strengthens its role as a trusted technology partner in the digitalisation of critical infrastructures.

As Fran Alcalá, CEO of Celestia TST, highlights: “Having this LoRaWAN network across all Aena airports represents a key infrastructure to enable new IoT services in the future.”

Statements

Ramón Bezanilla, Head of IoT Platform at Celestia TST: “At Celestia TST, we are proud to lead, alongside Ambar Telecomunicaciones, the deployment of Aena’s new LoRaWAN IoT network across all airports in Spain. From technical planning and coverage verification to remote supervision and equipment management, we will ensure robust and secure connectivity that drives operational efficiency and enhances the experience of millions of travellers.”

Roberto García García, Managing Director of Ambar Telecomunicaciones: “Working with Aena further strengthens our ability to operate in highly demanding technical environments such as the State’s Critical Infrastructures. Ensuring service continuity, information security and operational reliability are fundamental aspects.”
